The Auto-Popper is probably the most innovative practice tool devised since the beginning of the practical shooting sport. You all know that "Necessity is the mother of invention". As a new shooter, the necessity was for MORE PRACTICE TIME! Auto-Poppers will significantly increase your productive practice time by eliminating the need to walk down range and stand up steel, or tape paper practice targets. The Auto-Popper is an excellent target for draw-shoot-reload-shoot practice, and incredibly easy to transport, at only 12 lbs. each! The spring in the Auto-Popper is a "Guaranteed Forever" spring. If it breaks or wears out, we will replace it!
It's A Rifle Target Too!
It has come to our attention that our standard Auto-Poppers are great rifle/sniper targets. We have had customers shooting them with .223 rounds for years, from 25 yards and out, but every year or so (depending on use/abuse) we have had to send them new target faces. As pistol targets, these will operate indefinitely. We are finding out that, at 200+ yards, we will also get excellent life with rifles, i.e. multiple thousand rounds. As you can see, they are small, light weight (12 lbs. each), and easy to handle and carry. This lends itself to strategic positioning on a sniper course, or similar situation.
If your department has a budget for paper targets and other expendables, we think you’ll find the $47 replacement cost for new 1/3 popper target faces are an excellent value. Replacement cost for the Colt Speed Plate Auto Popper target faces are $58. Bolts and delivery charges are included with both.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Very simply, it works Great! Envision a 1/3 size Pepper Popper (14" tall, with the round part being 4" diameter). This popper is mounted to a hinged base, much the same as a full size or U.S. popper. The "impact factor" calibration screw has been eliminated, and a torsion spring has been installed on the hinge shaft. When you hit this target with anything larger than a .22, it falls backwards, just as regular poppers do. The difference is, this target IMMEDIATELY stands back up, ready to be shot again!
HOW FAST DOES IT WORK?
Let's put it this way. You are a Grand Master IPSC shooter. You have three of these at 12 yards, mounted 3-4 feet apart, shooting 1,2,3,1,2,3. The first one is up before you can get a bead on #3. As of this writing, we haven't found anyone who had to wait when there were only 2 targets!
WHAT DO I MOUNT IT TO?
There are two holes in the base, so you can: 1) drive some 3/8" x 12" long nails (landscape spikes) into the ground, 2) buy or make some cheap sawhorses and mount them parallel to the length of the sawhorse, 3) get a 2 x 12 and mount them to it, then set it on sawhorses, or on the ground. 4) mount it to an MGM Sniper base (There is a picture and description of our Sniper Base at the bottom of this page.) How creative can you get, and what are your specific needs? Remember: Bullet splatter will at some point cut through the wood. Have the face of the target sticking past the leading edge of the wood.
Get 6 Auto-Poppers and you'll have the most inexpensive plate rack in town!
WHY DOES IT WORK?
We all shoot with a certain degree of "sloppiness". The degree of "slop" is determined by target size, or by distance. On big or close targets, you go into "auto-hose" mode, without really aiming. The smaller the target, the less slop you allow. Practicing with small targets forces you to aim. After practicing on these, the Pepper Poppers are like shooting at box cars!
