Poppers

Much like several other items that are now on our product list, we resisted building this product as long as we could. But, enough people and agencies have requested it, so we finally caved in. I hope you like it!

My reluctance has been related to the weight that our competitors usually put on the bottom half of the target, that is required to reset it to the vertical position. The weight is also required to prevent the target from activating from the wind, while it is waiting to be shot. This additional weight is NOT a good thing, and has caused me a great deal of concern about the additional wear the target would show, which equates to a shorter life. The weight creates additional resistance that has to be overcome with the energy of the bullet. It creates MORE of the "object at rest" that "tends to stay at rest". That means, the impact from a center-fire rifle bullet has the potential to create more of a mark (a crater) on the face of the weighted target, than it will on a target that weighs less, or does not have the added weight on it.

So, we beat the counterweight issue AND the wind issue with two of the same light springs that we use on our Auto Poppers, which are 1/4 the size this target. This factor will significantly reduce the potential cratering of the target from center-fire rifle rounds.

Other PLUS factors of our design include fast assembly (5 seconds?), and an armor plated post. If the shooter engages the target while it is in the activated position it is possible that he'll hit the telescoping base post. Not a problem on the MGM product because it is armored! Even with the armored post, it still weighs less than similar products on the market.

The target face starts as our standard US Popper that is 28" tall.

If you’re gonna have a Man on Man shoot-off, you gotta have a Cross Over Stop Popper to be sure who the real winner was. Made of the same 500 Brinell Steel as our other targets, the Cross Over Stop Popper has two half size (21”) pepper poppers mounted side by side on a single base. Designed specifically for the man on man shoot-off situation, they are set at a slight angle, so they face the shooters squarely, they both fall on the same bumper, and they overlap when they fall. The winner is the guy (or gal) whose target is on the bottom. No more whining, and the person shooting the wimp loads may get there first, and still get beat if the other person is shooting more powerful loads. I’ve seen it happen more than once! A 1" wide nylon strap reset is standard, and 8" octagon targets (also 21" tall ) are a "same price" option.

Made from the same 500 Brinell hardness steel, the Split Pepper Popper is designed to improve accuracy, and bring one more fun target to your training. It is the same size (42” tall) as the standard Pepper Poppers.

Traditionally, the problem with split poppers is, the hinge is so sloppy the halves either overlap at the top, or there is an inch gap at the top. MGM has solved that problem by using a close tolerance machined bushing and a 1" stainless steel pivot shaft. That feature, coupled with a small amount of adjustment tolerance in the bolt holes allows you to have the target set up perfectly, with the space between the halves exactly the same at the top as it is at the bottom. In addition to using the target as a split popper, the connector plate at the bottom will allow you to fasten the halves together, so it will act like a conventional pepper popper.

I'm going to accuse John Hearne of coming up with this idea, or at least with pursuing it to the point that it got built. It was just MGM's good fortune that he chose to work with us. I think the pictures tell it all. There is a rectangular tube across the back that will accept a standard 1" x 2" stick. Slide the stick through and snug the clamp bolt in place and you are good to go. The narrow base of the popper (below the target area) has a piece of 3/8" thick flatbar on the back of it to provide additional rigidity. As with all our poppers, accessories like the the Cardboard Target Pop Up Bracket, the Forward Fall Bracket, and the Pigeon Flippers will all work with this target.
